Electromagnetic theory is fundamental to electrical
and electronic engineering. Advances in high-speed digital electronics
and in opto-electronics will present problems which cannot be solved
without an understanding of electromagnetic theory. In this book the
subject of electromagnetic theory is introduced in a physical and
intuitive way making use of elementary mathematics. The emphasis is on
the physical understanding which is the basis for solving problems.
Those who need to understand the full mathematical treatment of this
theory may find that this book provides a good starting point.
Engineers generally prefer to work with circuit theory than with field
theory and microwave engineers normally work with transmission line
equivalent circuits whenever possible. A major concern of this book is
with the way in which these equivalent circuits are developed. The
content of the book may be divided into three parts, in the first the
emphasis is on the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and the
second section deals systematically with the applications of the theory
to a wide range of components and devices. Many of these applications
are in microwave engineering, but optical and emc (electromagnetic
capability) topics are included wherever appropriate. The final part of
the book discusses microwave and emc measuring techniques and provides
an overview of the applications of electromagnetic waves in a variety
of systems. The aim of the author is to give the reader a basic
knowledge of electromagnetism which will make the professional
literature of the subject accessible. A list of references has been
provided for this purpose and a small number of exercises are grouped
at the end of each chapter to help the reader to understand the main
points in the text, to give confidence in handling the ideas and to
give a feel for the numbers involved. This book is intended to carry on
from the point the author reached in his previous book
"Electromagnetism for Electronic Engineers" and aims to be useful not
only to students, but also to those who discover the need for a
knowledge of electromagnetic theory later in their careers
